Islamic Theology in the Contemporary Academic Landscape

This paper explores the evolving role of Islamic theology (‘Ilm al-Kalām) in contemporary academia, examining its historical foundations, engagement with modern intellectual currents, and interdisciplinary intersections. It analyses how Kalām has adapted to the challenges of secularism, technological advancements, and globalization while maintaining its relevance in theological discourse. Through an assessment of institutional frameworks, scholarly trends, and socio-political contexts, the study highlights the ways Islamic theology contributes to ethical, scientific, and pluralistic debates. Additionally, it addresses key challenges such as ideological extremism, epistemological fragmentation, and the tension between tradition and modernity. Case studies from both Western universities and traditional Islamic seminaries underscore the diversity of theological pedagogy and research, demonstrating the continued vitality of Kalām in shaping contemporary thought.
